Iranians have always been worried about finding a suitable partner for their daughters, and as you can guess, Iran girl marriage is an essential issue for families. Marriage in Iran is under the influence of religion, tradition, and modernity. However, these factors play a significant role in Iran girl marriage; the tradition is still the most prominent. This article will explain more about Iran girl marriage and the average marriage age in Iran. It’s noteworthy to mention that the average marriage age in Iran depends on gender, place of living, and social status, which we will explain in the following.

Iran Girl Marriage Age

In human life, marriage is one of the most emotional occasions and is also one of the most important legal institutions of human cultures. One of the most often asked questions is what is the legal age of Iran girl marriage. This article will look into the matter and determine at what age a young Iranian girl and a  boy may legally tie the knot together. The necessity for physical preparation and maturity and the development of the intellectual capacities of persons to start living together and getting married is such that many legal systems of the globe have considered a minimum age to begin this stage of life. Since the Islamic revolution, the Iranian legal system has undergone multiple modifications and has faced different legislation governing the minimum age required for marriage.

The Average Age of Marriage in Iran

Because of the current economic downturn, the average age of Iran girl marriage and boy marriage has altered; in the past, young people would marry between the ages of 15 and 25; however, currently, young people cannot afford to marry at a young age. In Iran, the average age of marriage for males is 27.8 years, while the average age of marriage for girls is 23.1 years. Even though the age of marriage for girls in some areas of Iran is or under 13 owing to economic, cultural, and religious concerns, this is not the norm in Iran; Instead, it’s the case among a minority of groups rather than the majority. What is the reason behind this? Because Islamic law allows females to marry as young as nine years old, the practice is now referred to as “Child marriage.”

What Is the Legal Age of Marriage in Iran?

In 1954, the legal minimum age for males was 18 years old, while the legal minimum age for girls was 15 years old in Iran. However, there were several exceptions in the same year, with females being able to marry at the age of 13 and boys at the age of 15. After then, the age of marriage was raised or lowered multiple times, most recently in 1974 when the minimum legal age for females was up to 18 and for boys to 20 years old, which was somewhat out of step with society’s culture. Finally, due to the many changes that have occurred since 1954, the legal age of marriage for females is now 13, and for boys, it’s 15.

Iran Child Marriage Law

Child marriage occurs when a girl marries before the age of 18 years old; however, in Iran, the legal marriage age is 13. Please keep in mind that although child marriage happens in some areas of Iran, the average Iran girl marriage age is now up to 23 years old, and Iranian guys seldom marry before the age of 27. By permission of the lawful court, girls under the age of 13 can marry. Unfortunately, in certain disadvantaged districts of Iran, the marriage of girls under 13 is also widespread. In this circumstance, when the parents of the girl force her to marry, the prospects for education, future work, and effective participation in society are practically taken away from her, in which case they not only destroy the child’s future but also society will suffer and societal harms grow.

But another severe issue of marriage for girls under the age of 13 is that they don’t register the marriage officially at all, and they postpone the registration until the girl and the boy attain the legal age. The sad news is that more than half a million Iranian girls marry under the age of 14 each year. In terms of statistics, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to early marriage. According to Mohammad Reza Mahboubfar, a social harms specialist, the real number of children married is 5 to 6 times higher than the official statistic.

According to local rules, girls in rural Iran often have to marry at a young age. The Iranian law protects this law, is causing families to break apart and a generation of children to grow up with no opportunities or perspective. In Iran, the legal age of marriage is 13 for girls and 15 for boys. However, weddings may take place at a younger age with the agreement of fathers (or legal guardians) and the approval of a court judge. According to experts, the true number of child Iran girl marriage might be significantly higher since many of them are not formally documented. This fact creates a complicated situation where unregistered marriages’ spouses have no civil rights, and their children have no birth certificates. Unregistered child marriages deprive children of schooling and social support, putting them at risk of poverty, juvenile criminality, and addiction in the future.
