Iran protest slogans 2022 – 2023
After the Islamic revolution, so many attempts have been made to change Iran’s social or political status. Over the past years, Iranian have protested over political, economic, and even environmental subjects. However, the most critical protest that heave took place was the sequential protests of 2022. These protests started after the brutal death of Mahsa Amini by Morality police, and now Iranians worldwide are on the streets. In each of these protests, slogans differed depending on the subject of the protests. Now we will discuss the slogans of the 2022 protest and evaluate them from political, social, and economic points.
How did the 2022 protests start?
On 16 September 2022, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s situation in internal matters went from bad to worse. Iran faced many problems because of its nuclear programs, and the USA was widening its sanctions to stop its development. While Iranian authorities emphasized that these sanctions were useless, Iranians felt them.
While Iran was in a very delicate situation, the conservative candidate was elected in a controversial election. When Ibrahim Reisi took control of the office, since he was for his strict laws decided to set new rules for women’s dress code. When we talk about women’s dress code in Iran, this is where Hijab comes around. Hijab is the Islamic rule that indicates how a woman should dress in front of strangers. To fully execute these new rules, Reisi reinforced morality police and gave them a great deal of budget.
In the third month of the strict rules policy, a Kurdish girl was arrested by the morality police. While transferring her to the headquarters, she was beaten severely. During the education process, the morality police suddenly fell and transferred to Kasra Hospital. After three days in a coma, finally, her body gave up, and Mahsa passed away. After Mahsa’s death, a new wave of protest started on Twitter, and nearly four hundred hashtags were used. After protesting on social media, protests finally started in Kurdish cities such as Saghez and Sanandaj. Soon the protests spread to all cities, and now more than 27 provinces are involved in a domestic movement against the Islamic state.
Iran protest slogans
There are two different slogans in these protests; the first type concentrates on feministic points of the protests. The other kind of slogan directly involved the supreme leader and his sons. We will discuss these two types individually and analyze them from different perspectives.
Woman, Life, Freedom
This slogan was first heard in the 2006 Kurdish protest in turkey. In eastern provinces were very biased rules against Kurds, and that caused many problems for them. So women protested feministically to free themselves from patriarchal society with the Woman, Life, freedom slogan. Since Mahsa was an innocent Kurdish girl, her aunt (from her mother’s side) wrote the same motto on her tombstone.
The patriarchal society in Iran has always been one of the issues that limited women; however, in the last 43 years, it has become a severe problem. By relying on heaven’s word, the Islamic government tried to suppress women and make them do what they always wanted. Nevertheless, women are not meant to be restricted to boundaries set by men and are free souls.
Since this protest was a new form of social protest against a country, the Woman, Life, Freedom slogan was a new chapter in the Middle East’s social protests. This slogan is deeply rooted in women’s position after the Islam invasion. Now, they are trying to gain what they truly desire. During the Achaemenid and Sasanian dynasties, women were free and now want the same thing in the modern world.
Death to Supreme leader
If you want to compare the supreme leader’s position in Iran with the political status outside the country, the best example would be the middle age pope. The supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, considers himself the representation of the prophet and the God on Earth. Based on his current situation, it is believed that he has more than one million devotees who are willing to die for him. Now the status of this Holly political person is under threat by some feminist activists.
The first time that the slogan of Death to Supreme leader was heard on the streets of Tehran goes back to the 2018 Benzin protests. In 2022, again, people are chanting the same slogan in Iran, and this time they want to overthrow the leader. Political activists believe that the position of leader is now considerably changed, and this issue will continue to expand in the upcoming days.
We Don’t want Islamic Republic
This slogan was heard during the 2009 protest; however, it became widespread after the 2018 protests, and people around the country shouted it on every street. Islamic republic took control of Iran in 1978, and after that, they tried to change everything regarding the culture and history of this country. Currently, a new nationalist movement has started that is trying to regain the past pride of Iran’s past. They have fought for more than one decade, and now they want to overthrow the Islamic Republic in their fights.
Not For Ghaza, Not for Lebanon, only for Iran
Over the past few years, the Islamic Republic of Iran profoundly held proxy fighters in Israel and Lebanon to create chaos. It is estimated that more than 500 billion dollars have been invested in these two countries, and this number is growing. While Iranians are struggling in poverty, officials spend billions of dollars on proxy fighters worldwide. As a result of these acts, Iranians are trying to change the situation and inform the world that they are against this money spending.
Other Slogans in Iran protests
The slogans mentioned above were just sentences that we could translate into English. However, there are lots of slogans that translating into English would be impossible, which is why we have decided to write the slogans themselves for you.
